| What are some of your favorite Apps from the old days? Sundance is one of my personal favorites, although I can't say specifically what I liked about him; seems like he had a presence about him. | |

| I guess it depends upon how far back you want to go. Two of my favorites are Prince Plaudit http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/prince+plaudit and Wapiti http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/wapiti2 whoose bloodlines teamed up to fashion the reknowned Wap Spotted lines http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/wap+spotted . Wapiti in particular is to me a "horse of all times", meaning he could pass for foundation or modern - sort of the true test of greatness. Although his percentage of Appy is small, he was bred back when they were still trying to get the number of Appys up, and his TB line off of Man O War softened the Quarterhorse influence. Going back a little farther, born in 1947 (same year as me), Hands Up http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/hands+up2 Hands Up is a sort of overlooked by most people, but his bloodlines are prized by a lot of foundation Appy people. As with Wapiti, he has a good mixture of TB, Appy, and QH, that, together with Arab, were important breedings in the Appy reconstruction days. Going even further back, is Patchy http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/patchy3 who is what most of us think of when we think foundation Appy, with the thick neck. He comes through Knobby, who was an original Appy as described in his Allbreed narrative... - Quote :
- One of the most famous Palouse Country Appaloosa stallions.
Owned by Guy Lamb. He was a blue roan with black spots and was of pure blood, coming from the herd of Sam Fisher, the Palouse Indian Horse Breeder. Sam`s tribe had not been involved in the Nez Perce War, and had kept their horse herds intact. This meant they were a source for Foundation Breeders. Apache is a favorite, as is Sundance, who is largely mustang. Notice that all these horses have something in common, and that is a substantial percent of TB blood. Keep in mind, however, that the farther back you go, the more concentrated the Arab blood in Thoroughbreds. With each new generation of Thoroughbreds, their Arab roots become more and more distant and diluted. In other words, crossing an Appy with a TB in 1940 was not the same as today, whereas crossing an Appy with a QH back then wasn't that much different than crossing with one today.

| I remember looking at the Appaloosa News and seeing Prince Plaudit on the back cover of alot of the magazines, if I remember correctly. I really wanted a Plaudit horse and finally bought one years later. So many good looking Appaloosas back then. I just picked up the book Spotted Pride by Frank Holmes and it features alot of good looking old-time favorite horses. |

| I'm a fan of PP horses also. Actually I guess I like almost all the foundation horses, just some more than others. | |

| My preference runs to the Toby lines, but I do have a warm spot in my heart for Ocala Flight and Apache Double. | |

I too am partial to the Tobys. They are kind people oriented horses with lots of athletic ability. And they are SMART so training is relatively easy but they have common sense too so don't let themselves get into stupid places too often. I also like the Chief Chelsea bred horses.
